Field
trips are an integral part of the curriculum at HEAR in New Hampshire.
Every year our students enjoy several outings that serve to expand and
reinforce their
use of vocabulary and spoken language.
In the fall the entire school visited an orchard where the children picked apples and pumpkins. They enjoyed a picnic lunch, fed ducks at the farm pond and took a short hike. The discovery of a large frog in a puddle near the orchard generated a lot of excitement and conversation!
On
a trip to a local supermarket the Kindergarten students had the opportunity to
sample some exotic fruit, touch a lobster and decorate cookies. They went behind
the scenes and observed how food is packaged, stored and moved around. The students
decided that they liked the fork lift, going in the big refrigerator and using
the scanner at the checkout the best.
In conjunction with a unit on winter and winter sports, the students and staff at HEAR in New Hampshire went ice skating. Everyone was excited as they headed for the rink a short distance away. Some of our friends had seen ice skating on television and they thought it would be easy. They were surprised to discover that they couldn't do spins and jumps right away!
